When someone has a physical illness or injury, they turn to a doctor or hospital for treatment. Doctors treat physical ailments by performing surgery, prescribing medications or suggesting some form of rehabilitation treatment. The latter option is something quite familiar with the drug and alcohol addiction treatment industry. In fact, drug rehabilitation and rehab treatment still sit as the only viable treatment option for people who abuse substances.
In order to dispel any possible myths about rehab treatment, we want to offer up a quick summation of what rehab treatment entails. Professional counselors and clinicians focus addiction therapy on the treatment of an illness. Yes, medical and psychological experts now classify addiction as a disease. As such, it demands treatment.
We can break the treatment process into three segments. Each segment addresses some aspect of a patient’s addiction.
After a significant time of drug abuse, users build up a tolerance to their drug or drugs of choice. This tolerance is the basis of addiction. Once the body develops a need for a specific substance, the user becomes vulnerable to some rather harsh withdrawal symptoms should they decide to stop using.
Detox is the process the body uses to work through withdrawal. In a clinical environment, clinicians and doctors can monitor a patient’s progress, prescribe certain medications to help patients get through withdrawal with a minimum of discomfort. By offering patients an opportunity to detox in a safe environment, detox facilities are able to increase the likelihood of sobriety before rehab.
Treatment is the process by which counselors offer therapy to patients. The main goals of therapy are two-fold. First, counselors want to employ treatment methods that help patients get at the core of their issues. By gaining an understanding of why patients feel the need to abuse drugs, counselors become better able to offer up solutions.
Offering up solutions is what helps patients stay on the road to recovery. Many counselors will work with patients to help them better develop coping skills for recovery. Equipped with coping skills, patients are able to recognize their triggers in time to avoid potential relapse situations.
People in recovery will be in recovery for the rest of their lives. That’s because doctors can’t cure addictions, they can only help patients arrest their addiction. Since recovery in an ongoing process, aftercare programs take on an important place in the recovery process.
After treatment has been concluded, some patients are not quite ready to jump back into the world of total responsibility. Some need additional therapy while others might need a safe place from which they can work their way back into normal, everyday living. Sober and transitional living programs can help facilitate this gradual assimilation process. In combination with 12-Step meetings, aftercare treatment programs can often be the difference between the patient relapsing or not.
