“I had no direction in my life whatsoever when I came here… Now I want to go back to school to become an addiction therapist, so that I can be part of other people’s recovery and a positive force in their life like the staff at Beaches was for me.”

Once someone recognizes that they have an addiction, help is available. Treatment centers offer a variety of therapy options to help patients recover. Through the help of a drug and alcohol counselor, patients can learn about the root causes of their addiction and how to prevent a relapse.
Each person has a unique addiction. Trauma, mental illnesses, and genetics all play a role in fueling that addiction. To get the best treatment, patients need individualized care with a drug and alcohol counselor. There are a variety of options available such as:
Depending on the client’s needs and length of treatment, different therapy options are provided to help with recovery.
When someone has an addiction, they may do things they regret or hurt loved ones. Once they begin recovery, family therapy can help heal these old wounds. Families can come together in person or through telephone sessions. Through this option, patients can rebuild their relationships and develop a sober support group.
Group therapy is offered by a drug and alcohol counselor at the treatment center. With this option, the patient takes part in a therapeutic group of people who have suffered from addictions. They are given a chance to explore the problems that come up during recovery in a supportive atmosphere.
Depending on the patient’s needs and level of care, they may be given sessions with a drug and alcohol counselor once or twice each week. These sessions allow the client to focus on the root cause of the addiction. They are able to look at the ways they can change and improve their chances of recovery.
This option is designed to help patients who have experienced a major trauma in their life. Many patients do not realize how an early trauma can fuel addiction. When people stop using drugs, the intense emotions of the trauma often come back. During therapy, patients are able to address these emotions and work through them.
Another addiction counseling option patients can use is expressive therapy. Many emotions bubble up during rehab, so it is important to have a release for these feelings. This type of therapy focuses on an activity that allows clients to address recovery problems, build a support network and express their emotions.
Some of the expressive therapy options available include:
By learning how an addiction works, patients discover ways to control cravings and prevent relapse. They will learn about topics like co-occurring disorders, relapse prevention, the physiological effects of substances, co-dependency and post-acute withdrawal symptoms. Through these educational programs, patients learn how to ask for help and avoid situations that foster drug and alcohol abuse.
Once a patient realizes they need help, they will start with the detoxification process. In this stage, the body gets rid of any drugs or alcohol in the body. Afterward, the patient attends behavioral counseling or other therapy options lead by his or her drug and alcohol counselor. They are also treated for any co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety.
We tailor the entire treatment program to the client’s unique needs. Long-term support and treatments are available to help prevent relapse. Each treatment program includes the mental health and medical services patients need to recover.
Living with an addiction is destructive, but recovery is possible. Through the right treatment program, patients can take the first step on their road to recovery. To find out how a treatment center can help you, call Beaches Recovery today at 866.605.0532.
