Mar62019Alcohol AddictionControlled SubstancesTeen/Young AdultFor decades, drinking in college has been a rite of passage. All over the nation, teenagers gather in frats and dorms to celebrate becoming adults and preparing for the future. Unfortunately, there’s a price that comes with unfettered drinking by people too young to understand the dangers of doing so. If we can’t stop the problem of college students and drinking, we have to be able to address addiction issues. Why Student Drinking is a ProblemFor a moment, let’s forget that underage drinking is illegal. What we have on college campuses are young adults who are experiencing freedom for the first time. Many of them are prone to experiment and push personal limits. As a result of their youth, they are vulnerable to mistakes in judgment. They live in a world where if it feels good, then they do it.The problem is that they don’t have the experience necessary to understand the ramifications of their actions. As a captive audience, they might not have many entertainment options. As the pressure to get good grades increases, they might start feeling stress. These are all reasons students fall into the trap of problem drinking.Educating Kids About College Students and DrinkingCollege students like to consider themselves independent thinkers. Unfortunately, their experience levels don’t equip them with the tools to make good decisions. Any alcohol rehab center for young adults is going to have patients who thought they had all the answers. The truth is, their vulnerability to life’s problems makes them susceptible to inappropriate solutions like drinking. We have to do a better job of teaching our teenagers about responsible drinking. Of course, we would prefer they wait until they are of drinking age and better able to control themselves. Unfortunately, what we know about college students and drinking is that it’s going to happen. The alternative is to make sure they understand the signs of problem drinking and where to get help when they need it.Getting That Help at Beaches RecoveryIn our role as a top addiction treatment center, we make sure we have treatment options for young adults and teenagers.
