The unique thing about opioid abuse is it can start rather innocently. If a doctor prescribes painkillers to combat a patient’s ailment, that patient listens to his or her doctor. However, it has become commonplace for patients to start abusing opioid medications in an effort to continue masking pain, or for the sheer high they have enjoyed while on pain medication. After factoring in all the people who innocently start getting involved with the recreational use of opioids, it becomes clear why opioid addiction treatment has become such a hot topic.
To better understand the process of opioid addiction treatment, it’s useful to learn a bit about opioid addiction, and what it looks like. To begin with, opioids create a sense of euphoria in the brain. It’s this sensation that drives most people to abuse these substances. After constant use or abuse, the brain and body crave opioid-based drugs. If these cravings are not met, the user is subject to a long list of potential withdrawal symptoms.
Most people with a pain pill addiction usually exhibit certain characteristics. These characteristics might include a constant state of drowsiness, slurred speech, loss of coordination, slowed heart rate and breathing, mood swings and occasional nausea. The longer a person abuses these types of substances, the more severe the symptoms become.
By the time addiction has set in, the opioid abuser begins to suffer issues in their personal life. They usually have troubles at work and with family or friends. In the worst cases, poor decision-making can lead to illegal activities and physical harm. At this point, the only way out is through opioid addiction treatment.
In most cases, opioid addiction treatment requires three steps. The first step is a medically-monitored detox. Doctors recommend this option so patients can get through opioid withdrawal without suffering discomfort and distress. The objective of detox is to rid the patient’s mind and body of the drug-related toxins that have built up in their system.
The next step in the treatment process is education, counseling, and therapy. This is where the patient is going to have to open up and stay focused. The purpose of therapy is to give the patient some perspective on their addiction. After learning the truth about their addiction, patients are usually better prepared to begin learning the coping skills for recovery they will need in order to maintain long-term sobriety.
The final step in opioid addiction treatment is aftercare. Most top drug and alcohol rehab centers will provide access to helpful aftercare programs. This might include outpatient counseling, 12-Step meetings, and access to sober living or transitional living environments. Rehab facilities typically design their programs to assure that recovering patients always have access to resources for staying clean and sober.
